A TEENAGER afraid of going to the toilet has died of cardiac arrest after she did not pass a stool for two months.
An inquest into 16-year-old Emily Titterington’s death, found she was so scared of going to the toilet she refused all medical examinations and treatment, which could have saved her life, according to The Mirror.
Home Office pathologist Dr Amanda Jeffery said the teenager’s symptoms were in line with a condition known as “stool withholding”, which is more frequent in children.
She revealed that after not going to the toilet for eight weeks, Emily’s bowel grew so large that it compressed her chest cavity and caused her other organs to be displaced.
An autopsy revealed that Emily had a “massive extension of the large bowel” which caused cardiac arrest.
The teenager — who also had mild autism — suffered bowel problems most of her life, but had not been diagnosed. She eventually collapsed at her St Austell home in Cornwall on February 8, 2013.
The family’s GP, Dr Alistair James, said he had previously prescribed Emily laxatives, but was unable to examine the teenager due to her phobia.
“Had I done so, we would be having a different conversation,” he told the inquest.
“Her death could have been avoided with the right treatment at the right point.”
On the night of her death, paramedics were called to Emily’s house twice.

The first time they met with the teenager, paramedic Lee Taylor described her looking “pale” and complaining about pain between the shoulder blades. She refused to be taken to hospital for a medical examination.
A few hours later, Mr Taylor and another paramedic returned to the frantic calls of her father, who was shouting for help.
“When we arrived, her father James was outside shouting at us to help, saying something had gone badly wrong.”
Inside, they found mum Geraldine leaning over Emily, who was lying in the doorway of the bathroom.
“As she moved away, I could see that her abdomen was grossly extended.
“Her lower ribs had been pushed out further than her pubic bone — I was shocked,” Mr Taylor recounted.
It soon emerged that Emily routinely skipped going to the toilet, and that the family had tried many different methods of helping her, such as homoeopathic pills, and a technique known as Body Talk, which involved so-called “distance healing”. NEWS AU.
